Located in Tampa Bay, Clearwater has grown to become one of the largest cities in the state. This popular area combines metropolitan city life with beautiful beaches and outdoor parks. Clearwater brings the best of both worlds, and this list offers free attractions to enjoy during your visit.
Pier 60 is one of the most popular area landmarks to visit, and for a good reason! Unlike other piers, Pier 60 is more than a boardwalk. Street performers can be found everywhere, each with a different style and presentation.
As you walk through, you’ll be able to stop by any number of art and food vendors for a unique souvenir or for a quick bite. Fire breathers, living statues, and other buskers are sure to bring a smile to your face.
However, despite these cool things going on daily, the pier allows the sunset take center stage. Almost every day of the year, you can attend the Sunsets at Pier 60 Daily Festival. Beginning two hours before the sunset until two hours after (currently 6:30 to 10:30), the pier transforms into a celebration of nature’s best show. Come see a spectacular sunset every day, along with many other exciting events planned throughout the year.
Brooker Creek Reserve
Those who enjoy spending time in nature parks will love a trip to Brooker Creek Preserve. This large park is between 8,000 and 9,100 acres, and it is one of the top places to see the local ecosystems.
Whether you prefer bird watching, hiking, or horseback riding, this island has designated areas for them all. Educational and hiking tours are also available, and you can see a great mix of wetlands, forest, and pond areas.
Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. The park is opened just about every day from about 7 am until about an hour before sunset.
What’s a trip to Clearwater without visiting the beach? This award-winning beach is gorgeous, featuring white sand and stunning water. Unlike many public beaches, this popular hotspot offers full-time lifeguards, making it safe for swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
If you are looking for additional excitement, there are plenty of tours and other attractions along the beach. Whether you are looking for a boat tour, parasailing, or even the only beachside gym around, there are lots of opportunity for making memories.
Better still, Pier 60 is along the beach line, making it simple to see two great (and free!) attractions in the same area. Be sure to arrive early to grab a spot on this popular beach destination!
St. Petersburg Asian Lantern Festival
The only thing better than a community event is a free event! Taking place on September 15th, this inaugural evening event is going to feature live entertainment and an extensive collection of food trucks offering a variety of cuisines and beverages.
Lantern festivals are becoming increasingly popular, and the Clearwater area is home to a diverse population. I’m excited to see this event take off so it can come back even better next year!
This family-friendly event allows animals to attend as well. The event will run from 6 pm until 10 pm. As this is a free event and the parking is limited to the street, you may want to plan on showing up a little early.
Seaside Seabird Sanctuary
The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary is a fantastic non-profit that rescues and rehabilitates all manner of feathered friends. Since 2003, this local avian hospital has been dedicated to helping as manner sick and injured wild birds that they can find, giving back to nature in the best way possible.
The unfortunate part of this attraction is that it may not remain open for long. They do not receive any federal funds and rely on donations. As a result, they are finding it difficult to continue their mission, and are currently not able to take on more injured birds. With hurricane season in full effect, this may prove disastrous to our local wildlife.
If you are planning to visit, you can look forward to seeing over 120 birds who are now full-time residents. Their specific disabilities make it impossible to return to their natural homes, but they are cared for by the passionate staff of avian experts. Falcons, owls, herons, pelicans, and more different species can be found, as well as special events planned throughout the year.
