Some of the nation’s most popular musical festivals take place during summer and early fall. Perhaps there is just something to be said about the mix of sun, sweat, salt and good vibes as the industry’s biggest names take the stage to perform in front of throngs of adoring fans.
Among the sea of people dawning peace signs and cheek-to-cheek grins, onlookers will also find an unmistakable commonality: Fashion.
From sequins and neon tanks, to decorative headbands and glitter body paint, you can’t escape the undeniable festival fashion trends.
So, you want to achieve the look for yourself without the expensive price tag? We admit the prospect of playing dress up in front of thousands of people may seem intimidating. No worries, though! We’ve compiled a few DIY Festival Fashion ideas to help get you started.
- Bleach Printed Shirt
Things you’ll need: A shirt, a bleach pen, cardboard, a design of your choice.
To get this look, all you will need is a plain T-shirt or tank without graphics. Place a slab of cardboard in the middle of the shirt and color in a design of your choice with a bleach pen. Then, let it sit, rinse and dry. You’ll have a one-of-a-kind clothing item to show off to all of your friends!

- Festival T-Shirt Dress
Things you’ll need: oversized t-shirt, scissors
This dress is really pretty and would be perfect for a music festival! Choose a t-shirt that runs about mid-thigh (you can customize its length to your preference!). Cut it off at just above your belly button. Then, on the bottom half, cut a slit in the middle and drag the scissors diagonally on the sides of the slit. On the top half, cut a small opening about an inch away from the bottom. Then, gather the two sides, lead them through the hole on the top, and tie a knot. Voila!

- DIY Beaded Flip Flops
What you’ll need: a pair of flip flops, 1 spool of ½ inch ribbon, beads in assorted sizes, tiny seashells, hot glue gun, needle and thread
The “summer” version: wrap the ribbon around the existing straps of the flip-flops until you reach the base, creating a “V” near the intersecting straps as a place to attach the beads. Glue beads on, then stitch around them twice. Continue until the entire space is filled. You’ve got it!
- Braided Hair Wrap
What you’ll need: hair brush, fabric strips, clear hair band It’s the perfect hair accessory for your favorite festival. For a braided hair wrap, take a small section of hair and split into three equal parts. Secure the fabric around one piece of hair with a knot. Then, braid the hair, intertwining the fabric. Finish with a clear hair band. Repeat the wrapped hair braid in as many sections as you like. For a more dramatic effect, braid larger sections of hair and use thicker pieces of fabric. Perfect!
- Embellished Black Skirt
What you’ll need: black mini skirt, black lace, ribbon, beads, etc.
It’s the perfect “Go-To” concert skirt! To achieve the look, glue ribbons on the front of the skirt, maintaining parallel, horizontal lines. Sew twisted black chiffon fabric onto the front and apply sequins on fabric. Repeat using the back of the skirt. Done!
- DIY Glitter Sunglasses
What you’ll need: Modge Podge, glitter, foam brush, sunglasses
Don’t forget to take your sunglasses with you to the festival! Use the foam brush to coat the sides with Modge Podge over your sunglasses. Sprinkle lots of glitter over the Modge Podge. (You can never have too much glitter!) Allow all materials to dry and then shake off any excess glitter. Put another few layers of Modge Podge over the glitter so it can stick.
