It wasn’t too long ago that having a layover in the airport meant your food options were virtually zero. You could go for the typical fast food chain, or if you were trying to be a bit healthier, one of the overpriced kiosks that sold wilted salads and soggy sandwiches.
But no more.
Now, with more and more people traveling (and expecting more), many airport restaurants are not just ok, they are great with famous chefs lending their name and their menus to heighten the overall dining experience. That’s great news for travelers who are looking for more options when on the road.
Let’s take a look at some of the best airport restaurants you’ll be dying to try on your next trip.
An absolute favorite restaurant amount locals is Legal Sea Foods. They’ve expanded their empire into Logan Airport featuring a different concept in each terminal, from the full size restaurant, to experimental Legal’s Test Kitchen, to a grab and go stand. If you love good seafood, this is the spot to spend your layover.
New York (LaGuardia)
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the best food city in America takes its airport restaurants pretty seriously. That’s why any burger lover who is looking for something a bit more interesting (and substantial) than your average fast food join should check out Custom Burgers by Pat LaFrieda.
It’s easy to get lost in the wilds of Los Angeles LAX airport, but the good news is there is plenty of tasty food to be found. One such spot is a grab and go place called Ink.Sack which was created by Top Chef veteran Michael Voltaggio as a spin off to his popular LA eatery.
Most travelers get a little teary eyed leaving one of America’s most fun and vibrant musical cities, but you can keep the experience going with you all the way to the airport. Once you get hungry, head to Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, where you’ll find an airport restaurant that has good Southern food, and live performances.
If you are at all familiar with the chef world, the name Rick Bayless means some pretty delicious and authentic Mexican food. Well, if you’re planning on being in Chicago’s O’Hare airport anytime soon, you’re certainly going to be in luck. Head to Bayless’ spot Tortas Frontera for some amazing south of the border flavors.
Now, you might think the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport should be a beacon of BBQ, and that may be true, but it’s real gem is Asian spot One Flew South. This upscale restaurant and bar has both incredible cocktails and delicious fresh sushi that’s so good you’ll forget you’re at the airport.
While airport food might not always offer the healthiest of options, Denver’s Root Down takes care of that problem. Offering a selection of vegan, gluten-free, raw, and vegetarian dishes on the menu, if you want to avoid packing on something heavy before your flight, this is the perfect place to eat.
