Before you make a splash at the beach this summer, it’s important to consider safety first. Though a trip to the beach can deliver many memories and much laughter, it can also trigger danger for those who neglect to heed safety precautions. To help you avoid hazards and continue enjoying fun in the sun, our team at HotelCoupons.com has compiled our tips to keep your family safe at the beach this summer:
Beat the Heat
Though it’s unlikely that you will be able to escape the heat entirely, a tent or umbrella can help provide shade from direct sunlight. Additionally, consider hitting the beach in early morning or late afternoon hours to avoid the sun’s most harmful rays.
Though proximity to the sea may provide refreshment, it’s important that you also remain hydrated through water consumption. Consider packing a cooler with ice and water bottles to help keep you cool. Or, ditch the cooler altogether and opt for Corkcicle’s 60 oz triple-insulated Canteen instead.
Prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays can increase your chance of sunburn, so sunscreen should be an essential element of any skin safety routine. Sunscreens are available in many forms – lotions, creams, ointments, gels, sprays, wipes, and lip balms, to name a few. We recommend applying SPF 50 sun block to your face and SPF 30 or higher for other areas of your body.
Swim Near a Lifeguard
If you’re planning to wade in the water, then consider scoping out the closest lifeguard stands before doing so. Lifeguards are trained to spot dangerous tides and provide first-aid, so they often serve as first responders in the case of emergency. Lifeguard stands can also serve as a visible meeting spot in the case of accidental separation.
Protect Your Belongings
Before you meander down to the beach, be sure to secure your belongings ahead of time. Never leave personal possessions in your vehicle and consider carrying only the bare minimum with you. If you don’t think you will need it at all, it’s probably best to leave it at home.
