Budget-Friendly Valentine’s Day Ideas

By Kim Windyka • February 4, 2019 • Holidays, Tips

Who said you had to break the bank to have a memorable V-Day? Some of the simplest ideas can be the most enjoyable, and we’ve come up with a handful of options that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Go on a scavenger hunt

This idea gives you the opportunity to be creative and save some dough at the same time. Whether you come up with your own or find one online (Pinterest has some great suggestions to get you started), a scavenger hunt gets you out of your comfort zone and allows you make memories together while getting some mental (and physical) exercise.

Cook dinner together

Spending quality time together is more important than dining at the most expensive restaurant in town. Find a recipe you both love, turn on some tunes, and enjoy whipping up a delicious meal. Oh, and skip doing the dishes—they can wait until tomorrow.

Go on a picnic

If you’re in a warmer climate, packing a picnic can be one of the most romantic—and inexpensive V-Day outings. Half the fun is deciding what to bring along—jar salads, charcuterie, finger sandwiches, fruit salad, or whatever you’re in the mood for. Throw on some music, kick back, and chow down.

Have a movie night

With all of the streaming options available today, it’s never been easier to enjoy a flick (or five) from the comfort of your own home. Get creative and pick a fun theme around your favorite actor or genre, or just find something you’ve both been wanting to watch. Even better, find out if any local theaters are showing an old movie to celebrate the holiday; you’ll likely save some money since it’s not a new release!

See live music

Even if it’s not a big concert, you can catch some local live music nearly every night of the week in most urban and suburban areas. From jazz and folk to good ol’ fashioned rock ‘n roll, you can probably find a show that suits your fancy. In addition to checking your local venue’s websites, your area’s alt-weekly or newspaper probably has an event calendar that will give you some ideas.
