The St. Petersburg – Clearwater area of Florida is one of the top destinations in the state. While you might think that everyone is flocking to Disney or the vibrant Miami beaches, you’d be missing out if you didn’t head to the Gulf Coast side of the state.
There, you’ll find some of the most spectacular white sand beaches in the country, amazing sunsets, beautiful weather, and even a few dolphins and sea turtles as well. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the area, named Florida’s best beach town by USA Today in 2013, is a draw for those looking for beaches, fresh seafood, and water sports like boating, paddle boarding, and fishing.
Although you probably think Clearwater is a place where you can find fun ‘n sun all year round (and you’d be right), you haven’t truly experienced everything Clearwater has to offer until you spend some time at the Fun ‘n Sun Fest.
So, let’s take a closer look at what the fest has to offer.
Amerilife Fun ‘n Country Concert
Running from April 22nd to May 1st this year, the Clearwater Fun ‘n Sun Fest has a few major attractions that keeps people coming back year after year. The first is the Amerilife Fun ‘n Country concert. Here, you can bring your favorite beach blanket, snack, and lawn chairs, grab a nice piece of lawn and enjoy a free concert with some of America’s hottest up and coming country performers. Some past stars have included Gloriana, Kellie Pickler, and Cole Swindell. This year’s featured artists include Cassadee Pope, Brothers Osborne, Craig Morgan, and Granger Smith, so you’ll be sure to have a few hours of musical enjoyment.
Clearwater Blast Friday
This year, there will be a special extra event at the Fun ‘n Sun Fest. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Morton Plant Hospital, there will be a special Blast Friday event. This will kick off Friday, April 29th and feature all sorts of family friendly events and activities. Check out the food vendors and get a bite to eat before heading over to the Tampa Bay Times Cleveland Street Stage and enjoying a free live concert. The Winter’s Dolphin Tale Adventure will also be open and offering free admission for a few hours that night as well.
Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival
The other big event that happens at the Clearwater Fun ‘n Sun Fest is the Sugar Sand Festival. This ten day long event looks to highlight two of the biggest things people love about the beaches of Clearwater: the sand and the sunsets.
This year, the festival goes from April 15 to April 24th. This event truly has something for everyone, you’ll be able to see not only some absolutely incredible sand sculptures, but also fireworks, street performers, dance parties, and the main sugar sand walk exhibit.
If you want to try your hand at sand sculpting, you can also take a few classes and impress your friends next time you’re on the beach.
It’s pretty clear that in April and May the beaches of Clearwater are the places to be as these festivals kick off. Have you been? What have you enjoyed most?
