Maine is truly one of the hidden gems in America.
Tucked away in the upper reaches of New England and sharing a border with Canada, it really offers something for everyone. Visit Maine and you’ll find everything. There are beautiful hiking trails to rocky beaches, to awesome seafood, and even world-class ski and snowboarding trails.
Sounds like a dream, right?
So, for those of you ready to take a trip to Maine, here’s one destination you don’t want to miss: Bangor.
Bangor is known as the “Queen City” of Maine. It was named like that because when the rich and famous would summer on the nearby beaches in the 1800s they found the city and surrounding area so beautiful.
Now, Bangor is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Maine. Part of that is because they have lots of fun and interesting festivals and events held all year.
In this post, we’re going to highlight some of our favorites.
Maine Maple Sunday
New Englanders take a lot of pride in their excellent maple syrup and some of the best is from Maine. Each late March, Bangor hosts the Maine Maple Sunday festival. Here visitors can tour Maine’s sugarhouses (where maple syrup is made) for free tastings. Plus there are usually some fun and games too!
Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race
Calling all paddling enthusiasts! If you love being on a river with your SUP, canoe, or kayak, then head to Bangor every April. There, you can watch or take part in the Kenduskeag Steam Canoe Race. Going on for over 50 years, this is the biggest paddling event in New England and one of the most popular in the country!
American Folk Festival
Bangor is also home to the American Folk Festival. This is a three-day music event that happens each year in late August. Artists come from all over the country and the world to perform. The festival offers more than just music, though. Attendees can also shop for artisanal products and try locally made in Maine food too.
Bangor Beer Festival
Appropriately named “Tap Into Summer” the Bangor Beer Festival brings craft and local beer enthusiasts from all over the country. Held every June, this will be the 5th year for the event. Last year, Tap Into Summer featured 20 different Maine-based breweries all offering tastings. It only continues to grow each year!
Fright at the Fort
Have you ever spent Halloween inside a fort? Well, in Bangor, you can! If you want to enjoy a truly unique (and very scary) Halloween experience, this is it. Each year, Fort Knox hosts a fully interactive event called Fright at the Fort, that is so good it’s won a number of awards! If you’re brave enough, you can give it a try.
As you can see, there are tons of things to do in Bangor, Maine. So, the next time you’re thinking about a trip to New England, head up the coast, and add Bangor to your list!
