Nestled right on the North Carolina and South Carolina border you’ll find one of the best amusement parks in the country, Carowinds.
Dubbed as “the premier entertainment destination of the Carolinas” the park has almost 400 acres of non-stop, heart pounding thrill rides that will make you want to come back again and again.
First, let’s take a look at some of the basics about the park. Although technically located in South Carolina, Carowinds is only a 20 minute drive from North Carolina’s hub, Charlotte, making it an easy destination for out of state travelers looking for some fun.
Carowinds has a number of different sections within the main park itself.
For people who are looking to make sure the little ones are entertained during the trip, then head to Planet Snoopy. Here, you’ll find all your favorite characters from the Peanut’s gang to meet and greet, plus rides and live entertainment.
Carolina Harbor Water Park
Why visit just an entertainment park when you can visit a water park too, especially during those hot Carolina summers. Carowinds doesn’t disappoint with the Carolina Harbor Water Park featuring the six story tall Blackbeard’s Revenge water slide, Pelican Plunge, and the Dorsal Fin Drop.
There are also a number of attractions inside the water park that won’t give you quite the adrenaline rush, so are perfect for kids or those looking for a calmer ride like Costal Currents or the Sand Dune Lagoon.
Want to take a break from the thrill rides and learn a bit about the life and times of these pre-historic creatures? Well, then you’re welcome to explore the Dinosaurs Alive section of the park.
Here, you’ll encounter a number of attractions, art showcases, and re-enactments. It’s also the perfect educational and interactive experience from anyone who wants to learn more about dinosaurs, no matter what the age.
Even though Carowinds has all sorts of events, live shows, and attractions that keep people entertained during their time in the park, the real draw for many visitors are the roller coasters and thrill rides.
Carowinds currently has just over a dozen different roller coasters and thrill rides, including two of the tallest steel roller coasters in the United States. So, if you’re looking to check some epic roller coasters off your bucket list, this is the place to start doing it!
The most popular coasters (not to mention the most thrilling) are considered to be the Fury 325 and the Intimidator. Both reach speeds upwards of 75 miles per hour (with the Fury 325 hitting almost 100!) and are some of the longest coasters in the country.
But, those two aren’t all there are to see. Adrenaline junkies also love the Nighthawk where riders lie face down, the Vortex a stand up roller coaster, and the Afterburn with its multiple corkscrews and space drop.
As you can see, you’re not going to run out of things to enjoy during any trip to Carowinds. Even if you aren’t someone who loves thrill rides, with all the other attractions there’s plenty to do. And, if you absolutely love roller coasters, well, this is the place for you!
