Did you know Orlando, Florida gets down to 9 degrees every winter and you can go snow tubing? No? Well, grab your parka and jump inside this post.
Yes, there is actually ice in Florida. 2 million pounds of it, to be exact! You can find it over at the Gaylord Palms Resort, thanks to an annual event called ICE! which has been around for many years now.
What is ICE!?
ICE! is a walking tour, where you will be surrounded by fluorescent lights and stunning ice-sculptures which have all been hand-carved by talented Chinese artists.
The word “sculptures” doesn’t quite do it justice. Inside, you will find elaborate scenes to wander through, even ice bridges to walk up and ice slides to ride down. If you’re wondering how long it all takes to create every year, your questions will be answered inside with a quick and informational video on the entire process.
While packing winter clothes for a trip to Florida might sound like a joke- it’s not. The ICE! exhibit gets chilly. Because remember, it has to stay cold enough to keep the sculptures from melting in the Sunshine State.
Prior to entering, you are given a complementary jacket. However, if you want your head, necks, and hands to stay warm, you should bring along hats, scarves, and gloves.
Don’t worry, if you forget yours, you can purchase some at the door. Pants and closed-toe shoes are required.
Things to Do
Walk around and marvel at just how much ice there really is! (SO MUCH.)
Whizz down some slides!
And if you’re lucky, stop and watch the artists at work! Sometimes, they are there working their magic for everyone to see.
There is also a portion where you can snow tube if you pay for the extra activity. Children must be accompanied by an adult rider.
You don’t need to be staying at Gaylord Palms in order to enjoy the show. It’s open to the public. However, if you are a guest at the Gaylord Palms and you are an active military member, ask about how you can get your discounted tickets. In addition, Florida residents can also receive a discount on their tickets.
