Haven’t made plans for the last big weekend of summer? Don’t fret just yet. Take a look at some of these tried-and-true destinations for a memorable long weekend that will be the perfect send-off to the season.
1. Santa Barbara, CA
Santa Barbara is widely considered one of the prettiest places in the country. Accommodations might be a bit pricey, but they’re totally worth the expense for the gorgeous views and world-class shopping and dining that will reward you once you’ve arrived. Acquaint yourself with the area with a stroll down State Street, the city’s main drag, or the bustling Stearns Wharf area. History buffs will love the beautiful, well-preserved Old Mission as well.
2. Chicago, IL
The Windy City might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a summer weekend, but the weather is perfect this time of year, and there’s plenty to see and do. Catch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, stroll around Millennium Park, or enjoy an afternoon at Navy Pier. Culture vultures head to the Art Institute of Chicago, The Symphony Center, or the Oriental Institute Museum.
3. Bar Harbor, ME
The Bar Harbor region is home to Acadia National Park, as well as a picture-perfect New England downtown full of shops, restaurants, and quaint bed-and-breakfasts. In other words, it’s the ideal place to say goodbye to summer, whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat or family-friendly getaway. If it’s your first visit, check out one of the many food or cultural tours through town.
4. San Antonio, TX
The Riverwalk has everything you need for a day (and night) on the town in a small area: a number of spots to eat, museums, attractions, boutiques, and even hotels. Talk about convenience! Elsewhere in the city, you’ll find Natural Bridge Caverns, the San Antonio Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and — how could we forget — The Alamo.
5. Las Vegas, NV
There’s always Vegas! While you can usually find deals here at any time of the year, Labor Day is a particularly popular time to hit Sin City, despite the still-scorching temperatures. Check out rental car and flight packages to save a little extra, and if you’re not set on seeing a popular show, consider waiting until you arrive to snag discounted tickets on the strip for a same-day performance.
