Traveling with toddlers can get messy – both literally and figuratively.
While on the road, schedules are thrown out of sync and daily routines are disrupted. Every parent knows that leisure travel with toddlers can quickly turn from pleasant to disastrous at any moment. Regardless, there is still no substitute for the joys of family bonding and the memories that can be made on the road.
If you’re planning to travel with toddlers, we’ve compiled a few tips to make your life easier:
There is no doubt that toddlers have short attention spans, which makes it exceptionally difficult to keep their racing minds occupied on the road. Whether it’s a portable DVD player, iPad or other form of electronic device, an investment in video tech can be any parents’ saving grace on the road.
Hunger can strike between meals and grumbling tummies can make for grumpy toddlers. Young children aren’t exactly the most delicates eaters either, so be sure to pack travel-friendly snacks for the road. Keep a stash of cheerios, granola bars, and other healthy munchies in close reach.
Whether you’re tuning into a radio station or broadcasting songs over Bluetooth, engage the whole family in sing-alongs to make the drive easier for everyone. If you’ve created a playlist ahead of time, allow your toddler to choose his or her favorite song and invite passengers to sing along.
Pump the Brakes
For toilet-training toddlers, frequent bathroom breaks on long road trips are a necessity. If possible, factor in potty breaks ahead of time. Consider also keeping a change of clothes for your toddler easily accessible, just in case a wardrobe change is needed while you’re still en route.
It’s not always easy to be out of one’s element and cramped in a small environment. So, stash a few keepsakes from home hidden in the glove compartment. Then, when you’re sensing an impending meltdown, show your toddler his/her favorite toy who has arrived to save the day.
