The Getty in Los Angeles has it all: amazing art, stunning architecture, beautiful city views, and tranquil gardens. You could easily spend a day taking in everything it has to offer—and in fact, we recommend you do just that. It’s the perfect way to spend a sunny L.A. afternoon.
There are two locations: The Getty Center, and The Getty Villa.
The Getty Center
Begin your visit by taking in some art. The focus is on European and American pieces, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photos. The museum’s permanent collection features work by Rembrandt, Monet, Degas, Walker Evans, and Robert Mapplethorpe. There are also illuminated manuscripts that encompass the Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles.
Current art exhibitions include In Focus: The Camera, Flight of Fancy: The Galle Chandelier, and Blurring the Line: Manuscripts in the Age of Print.
There are several gardens to explore, but the most expansive is the 134,000 square-foot Central Garden, where you’ll find bougainvillea, azaleas, and more than 500 other varieties of plants. For something a little different, check out the Cactus Garden or one of three sculpture gardens.
When you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a bite to eat at The Restaurant, a full-service eatery where you can gaze at the Santa Monica Mountains as you dine. Smaller bites like sandwiches, soups, and pizzas can also be found at the self-service Cafe.
The Getty Villa
Over at the Getty Villa—a reimagining of a Roman country home, also on the campus—is ancient Greek and Roman art, four Mediterranean-style gardens, and a cafe.
Wrap things up with a walk around to explore the architecture. Feel free to explore on your own, or take a free guided tour to learn more about either the Getty Museum or Getty Villa’s incredible and unique buildings. Don’t forget to stop in the gift shop for an L.A. souvenir before you go.
The Getty is open 10:00am–5:30pm Tuesday through Friday and 10:00am to 9:00pm Saturday. Admission is always completely free, and parking is available onsite for $20 or $15 after 3:00pm.
