Ah, the much-maligned layover. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be a total snoozefest (unless you want it to be … see the tip below). While you may not have the luxury of exploring a city like Anthony Bourdain does on his TV show, there are a few things you can do to make your time in between flights a bit more bearable.
Grab a Bite.
These days, most sit-down airport eateries are surprisingly chic, so why not skip the food court and go gourmet? Since many of your fellow patrons will also be dining solo, lose any self-consciousness or worry about the stigma of securing a table for one, and enjoy a nice pre-flight meal. You can’t deny that it’ll be better than anything you’ll be having on-board.
Need some reading material? How about a travel pillow to catch some Zs on the plane, or Tylenol for that killer migraine? Hit up the nearest newsstand for all of that stuff you forgot to bring with you during the packing whirlwind — after all, you might not have a chance once you touch down next.
Camp out for a bit and make sure your phone has enough juice — most airports have designated charging areas, and some can even be found at your gate! We’ve all been there, but the last thing you want is to have to postpone plans at your destination because you need to hunt for an outlet.
Take a Nap.
Break out that travel pillow and rest your eyes for a bit once you’re settled in at your connecting gate, since you know you probably won’t be able to do it on the plane. Just make sure to activate your alarm so you don’t sleep through that next flight!
You never know who you’re going to meet! If you’re of age, of course, snag a seat at the most bustling airport bar and chat up the stranger next to you. You might just make a new friend, or a business or love connection. At the very least, you’ll be a little more relaxed for your flight.
Answer Nature’s Call.
Anyone who has flown knows that airplane bathrooms aren’t the best. It’s a hassle dragging your luggage with you, but you’ll enjoy more space and shorter lines if you just head to the restroom before you board.
